History of the Area
Chaney Hill State Forest, located in the town of Nelson, New Hampshire, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The area was initially settled by farmers and loggers who took advantage of the dense forests and fertile soil of the region.

In the late 1800s, the region went through a significant deforestation period due to the booming timber industry. Many of the ancient forests were cut down to supply wood for various purposes, including construction, fuel, and manufacturing. The deforestation led to environmental concerns, including soil erosion and loss of wildlife habitats.

In the early 20th century, efforts were made to restore the forests through reforestation initiatives. One such effort was the purchase of land on Chaney Hill by the New Hampshire State Forest Commission, which aimed to protect and restore the natural resources of the area.

Throughout the 20th century, the Chaney Hill State Forest underwent various management practices to promote the growth of diverse tree species and enhance wildlife habitat. The forest has been managed sustainably, with selective timber harvesting practices and diverse silvicultural techniques.

Chaney Hill State Forest covers approximately 1,650 acres and encompasses a range of habitats, including mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and steep slopes. It is managed by the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands in conjunction with other state forests in the region.
