History of the Area
Fox Island State Park is located in northeastern Ohio, near the town of Port Clinton. The park is situated on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie.

The history of Fox Island State Park is closely tied to the island's previous uses and its eventual conversion into a state park. The island was originally home to a Native American tribe known as the Ottawa, who used it as a hunting and fishing ground. The island's rich natural resources provided food and shelter to these early inhabitants.

In the mid-1800s, European settlers began to establish themselves on Fox Island, primarily engaging in fishing and hunting activities. The island's strategic location enabled them to have easy access to the abundant fisheries in Lake Erie.

In the early 1900s, with the decline of the fishing industry, the island transitioned into a popular recreational spot. Resorts were built on the island, attracting visitors who sought leisure and relaxation on the shores of Lake Erie. Over time, the resorts expanded their amenities to include cottages, activities such as boating and swimming, and even a dance hall. During this period, Fox Island became a prominent vacation destination for families from nearby cities.

However, in the 1930s, the Great Depression and the subsequent rise in automobile usage led to a decline in visitors to Fox Island. The resorts closed, and the island fell into disrepair and neglect. The remaining structures were either demolished or gradually decayed over time.

Recognizing the natural significance of the island and its potential as a recreational area, the State of Ohio acquired a majority of Fox Island in the late 1960s. Fox Island State Park was officially established on February 26, 1969.

Fox Island State Park covers approximately 400 acres and provides a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors. The park offers hiking trails, fishing spots, picnic areas, and a sandy beach along Lake Erie. It is also a popular destination for birdwatching, with numerous migratory bird species passing through the area.
