History of the Area
1. Early History: Prior to European colonization, the area where Harrison State Forest is situated was home to various Native American tribes, including the Catawba people. They utilized the land for hunting, farming, and other traditional activities.

2. Acquisition: The land that comprises Harrison State Forest was acquired by the South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) in the mid-1940s. The SCFC was established in 1927 to protect and manage forest resources in the state.

3. Initial Development: In the early years, the SCFC planted tree seedlings and implemented forest management practices to preserve and enhance the forest ecosystem. This involved activities such as controlled burns, timber harvesting, and wildlife management.

4. Dedication to Governor Olin D. Johnston: The forest was officially named Harrison State Forest in honor of Governor Olin D. Johnston, who served as the Governor of South Carolina from 1935 to 1939 and later became a U.S. Senator. The dedication took place on May 19, 1949.

5. Expansion: Over time, the SCFC acquired additional land, expanding Harrison State Forest to its current size of approximately 7,260 acres. This expansion was aimed at increasing the forest's conservation value and recreational opportunities for the public.

6. Recreational Activities: Today, Harrison State Forest offers various recreational activities for visitors, including hiking, picnicking, horseback riding, and hunting. The forest's trail system attracts nature enthusiasts and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year.
