History of the Area
Located in the heart of Oregon, this natural reserve has a rich history that dates back to its establishment. The park was initially private land owned by John and Alice Helmick who were early settlers in the region during the 19th century.

The couple had purchased several acres of property along Luckiamute River where they built their home and started farming activities. Over time, as their family grew larger with children and grandchildren, so did their farmland which eventually covered vast areas on both sides of the river.

In 1983 after many generations within the Helmick family owning it, part of this expansive farmstead was donated to Oregon State Parks Department for public use by one descendant named E.E Wilson. This generous donation included approximately half-mile stretch alongside Luckiamute River providing an ideal location for recreational purposes such as fishing or picnicking under towering cottonwood trees lining up against serene riverside views.

Since then significant developments have been made including construction facilities like restrooms while maintaining original features from old homesteads still visible today adding historical value into overall visitor experience at park premises.

Today visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities ranging from hiking through lush green trails teeming with local wildlife species; bird watching especially during migration seasons when rare birds flock around wetlands area; canoeing down calm waters amidst scenic landscapes surrounding them among other leisure pursuits available here all year round thanks largely due efforts put forth towards conservation initiatives over years ensuring preservation unique ecosystem found within these lands making it truly special place worth visiting whenever you're passing through beautiful state known worldwide its diverse nature offerings -Oregon!
