History of the Area
The forest has a rich history, dating back to the early settlement of the region. In the mid-18th century, European settlers began to occupy the area, which was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Abenaki before their arrival. The settlers cleared land for farming and used the forest for natural resources such as timber and firewood.

During the American Revolution, the Battle of Bennington took place in close proximity to the present-day forest, in 1777. This battle was a significant turning point in the war, as it halted British General John Burgoyne's attempted invasion from Canada.
