History of the Area
Mosquito Creek State Wildlife Area is located in Trumbull County, Ohio. The area was originally established as a reservoir to control flooding, provide water supply, and generate hydroelectric power for the surrounding region. The project began in the 1930s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Mahoning River flood control system.

Construction of the Mosquito Creek Dam and reservoir started in 1935 and was completed in 1944. The dam, standing at about 87 feet tall and over 3,000 feet long, created the 7,850-acre Mosquito Creek Lake. The reservoir, which covers an area of about 2,483 acres, became a popular destination for outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and wildlife watching.

In 1951, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) entered into a lease agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area was established. This created a partnership between the state and federal agencies to manage the land surrounding the reservoir for conservation purposes.

As a wildlife area, Mosquito Creek became a haven for various wildlife species. The diverse habitats, including wetlands, woodlands, grasslands, and water bodies, provided suitable environments for a range of animals and plants. It offers opportunities for hunting, trapping, and fishing, as well as wildlife observation and environmental education.

The ODNR has continually worked to maintain and improve the wildlife area. They have actively managed the lands to promote the growth of native vegetation and provide proper habitats for wildlife species. Efforts have also been made to control invasive species and mitigate potential impacts from human activities on the ecological integrity of the area.

The Mosquito Creek State Wildlife Area remains an important site for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. It offers recreational opportunities for visitors while playing a significant role in the conservation and preservation of Ohio's natural heritage. The area provides not only a scenic and tranquil retreat but also educational resources for individuals interested in learning about local wildlife and ecosystems.
