PIKES POINT STATE PARK
The "lakes area" of northwest Iowa offers a tremendous array of outdoor recreation opportunities, year-round. The unique setting of beautiful and clear Lakes East and West Okoboji, Big Spirit Lake and other water bodies truly provides wonderful opportunities for outdoor recreation. The focal point for state parks and recreation areas in this region is beautiful Gull Point State Park, established in 1933. Gull Point provides a pleasing, shaded setting on West Okoboji Lake and offers a well-rounded variety of outdoor recreation facilities.
Located on the shores of West Okoboji Lake, Pikes Point was historically used by Native American tribes for fishing and hunting. European settlers later utilized the area primarily for agriculture and recreation due to its scenic views and abundant fish.
The land transitioned into a public leisure space in 1923 when it became officially designated as a state park. It is named after Zebulon Pike, an early explorer who passed through Iowa but never visited this specific site.
Within its boundaries lies one of Iowa's deepest natural lakes, drawing visitors for water activities since establishment. The surrounding region includes historical features such as Arnolds Park Amusement Park established in 1889 nearby.
Facilities have been added including picnic areas, restrooms, playgrounds while maintaining environmental conservation efforts to protect native ecosystems. Seasonal changes bring diverse recreational opportunities from swimming and boating in summer to ice-fishing during winter months.
The Gull Point campground is one of the most popular in the lakes area. The campground is well shaded and features paved roads, playground equipment, modern restroom and shower facilities, as well as a sanitary dump station. There are a total of 112 campsites, 60 with electrical hookups. Starting February 13, 2006 advance campsite reservations can be booked through the park reservation system. Half of the campsites are still available for self-registration on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Gull Point lodge, built during the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corp, is the largest such facility in the state. It features kitchen facilities and will seat 140 people. The lodge is a wonderful setting for group activities such as wedding receptions and family reunions. The lodge is available on a reservation basis through the park manager.
Gull Point's beach provides a fine place for young and old to sunbathe and splash in the crystal clear water. West Okoboji and the many other lakes are some of the prime fishing spots in Iowa.
The park offers a variety of boating options. It has a boat ramp, allowing visitors to launch their own vessels into the waters of West Okoboji Lake for fishing or leisurely exploration. The lake is known as one of Iowa's "Great Lakes" and provides ample opportunity for water-based recreation including sailing, motor-boating, jet-skiing etc. However, there are no rental facilities within the park itself so guests must bring their own equipment.
Enjoy fishing in a lake rich with Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass and Yellow Perch. Boat ramps are available for easy access to the water. Ice fishing is popular during winter months. Fishing gear can be rented on-site.
