COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE NATIONAL SCENIC AREA
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is a spectacular canyon of the Columbia River that stretches over 80 miles along the border between Oregon and Washington. Encompassing approximately 292,500 acres, this natural wonder was designated as a National Scenic Area in 1986 to protect its scenic beauty and cultural heritage.
At its heart lies the river itself, which has carved out cliffs up to 4,000 feet high. The gorge's diverse ecosystems range from temperate rainforests to dry grasslands while hosting numerous waterfalls including Multnomah Falls - one of Oregon's most famous landmarks. Recreational opportunities abound with hiking trails like Eagle Creek Trail or exploring historic sites such as Vista House at Crown Point.
Opened for public enjoyment on November 17th, it offers visitors year-round activities: windsurfing due to strong wind patterns unique here; fishing; boating; sightseeing among vibrant wildflower displays during springtime or autumnal foliage colors later in the year.
