PROMPTON STATE PARK
Prompton Dam and Reservoir, the centerpiece of what would become a state park in Pennsylvania's Wayne County, was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control on the West Branch Lackawaxen River. Completed in 1960, this project aimed to protect downstream areas from flooding.
Prior to its establishment as a recreational area, much of the land surrounding Prompton Dam consisted primarily of undeveloped woodlands with some agricultural use scattered throughout. The Commonwealth acquired ownership through various means including purchases and donations over time.
In 1972 following Hurricane Agnes' devastating floods across Pennsylvania which underscored need for effective water management strategies like those provided by Prompton's facilities; efforts increased towards developing outdoor recreation opportunities around reservoirs such as these created by dam constructions statewide.
