MAGNOLIA SPRINGS STATE PARK
Magnolia Springs State Park is known for its crystal-clear springs flowing 7 to 9 million gallons of water per day and the beautiful boardwalk which spans the cool water. During warmer months, visitors may watch for alligators, turtles and other wildlife near the springs. A 28-acre lake with accessible dock is available for fishing and boating. Numerous picnic shelters and tables are perfect locations for family reunions and birthday parties. During the Civil War, the site was called Camp Lawton and served as ?the world?s largest prison.? Today, little remains of the prison stockade; however, the earthen breastworks which guarded it may still be seen.
Before its designation as a park, the land served various purposes including agricultural use and was part of a plantation. During the Civil War, it housed Camp Lawton, one of the largest Confederate prisoner-of-war camps. The natural springs on-site were once used by Native Americans for their purported healing properties.
Established in 1939 through local efforts and with assistance from programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), facilities were constructed to promote recreation and conservation. Over time, amenities such as picnic areas, hiking trails, playgrounds have been added or improved upon.
The site's historical significance is highlighted by remnants of Camp Lawton; archaeological work continues to uncover artifacts there. A museum within provides context about this period in history.
Changes over years include upgrades to recreational facilities while maintaining ecological integrity around Magnolia Springs' crystal-clear waters which flow at an estimated rate of seven million gallons per day.
