BIG BAY STATE PARK
Big Bay State Park is on Madeline Island, the largest of Lake Superior's 22 Apostle Islands. The 2,350-acre park, has picturesque sandstone bluffs and caves and a 1.5-mile sand beach.
The park, established in 1963, has picnic areas with tables, grills, water and toilets; a campground with drinking water, showers and toilets; an indoor camp for nonprofit groups; an outdoor group camp; and more than nine miles of trails, including interesting nature trails.
A Wisconsin State Park System vehicle admission sticker is required on all motor vehicles stopping in state parks, forests and recreation areas, please visit the

Nestled on Madeline Island, the park offers freshwater fishing opportunities from its shores or via boat. Anglers can catch smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and various panfish species in these waters. Ice fishing is popular during winter months for those seeking a chilly adventure.
Big Bay State Park is located near Ashland
Big Bay State Park offers scenic picnicking spots with tables and grills overlooking Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay. Shelters are available for rent, providing a covered space for larger gatherings or inclement weather. The park features open grassy areas perfect for spreading out blankets and enjoying a meal surrounded by nature. Visitors can also picnic near the beach after swimming or hiking on nearby trails to work up an appetite.
Ferry boats operate on regular schedules between Bayfield and La Pointe from April to December.
County Highway H loops around Madeline Island from La Pointe. To get to Big Bay State Park, take Highway H counterclockwise (Middle Road) from La Pointe about 4 miles to Hagen Road and continue east on Hagen Road about 2 miles to the park entrance.
No launching facilities are available at the park, but boats can be launched at the public landing in Bayfield or at a privately operated landing on, Madeline Island. (Consult the Coast Guard at Bayfield for Lake Superior navigation information.)
