LOGAN ELM STATE MEMORIAL
LOGAN ELM STATE MEMORIAL
Ohio 361
Circleville, Ohio   43113
(lat:39.509 lon:-82.955) map location
Logan Elm State Memorial is said to be the site where, in 1774, Chief Logan of the Mingo tribe delivered his eloquent speech on Indian-white relations. The speech was supposedly delivered under a large elm tree. Considered to be one of the largest elms in the U. S., the tree stood 65 feet tall, with a trunk circumference of 24 feet and foliage spread of 180 feet. It died in 1964 from damage by blight and storms.

The tree's former location is marked by a plaque. Other plaques and monuments in the park honor Native Americans and early Ohio settlers.
History of the Area
Logan Elm State Memorial is located in Circleville, Ohio and commemorates the famous Chief Logan and the pivotal Battle of Piqua between Native American tribes and European settlers. Here is a brief history of the memorial:

1. The Battle of Piqua: The area around Logan Elm State Memorial was once the site of an ancient Shawnee village. In 1780, during the American Revolutionary War, a battle took place between a Shawnee-led Native American confederacy and American settlers. The battle resulted in a significant defeat for the Native Americans.

2. Chief Logan: Chief Logan, also known as Tah-gah-jute, was a prominent Shawnee leader. Following the Battle of Piqua, he became a symbol of Native American resistance against the encroachment of settlers. He delivered a powerful speech expressing his grief and desire for peace, which was later published and garnered widespread recognition.

3. The Memorial: The Logan Elm State Memorial was established in 1927 to honor Chief Logan and commemorate the site of the Battle of Piqua. The memorial sits on a hilltop and features a bronze statue of Chief Logan. It also includes a limestone relic from the original Logan Elm, a massive tree that was believed to be where Chief Logan delivered his famous speech.

4. Restoration and Expansion: Over the years, the memorial has undergone restoration and expansion. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) worked on improving the site, constructing a stone tower, walkways, and picnic areas. The memorial's museum, which provides historical information about Chief Logan and the battle, was added in the 1960s.

5. Cultural Significance: Logan Elm State Memorial holds cultural and historical significance for both Native American and non-Native American communities. It is a place where people can learn about the area's history, reflect on the struggles and interactions between Native Americans and settlers, and appreciate the legacy of Chief Logan.

Logan Elm State Memorial stands as a tribute to Chief Logan and a reminder of the conflict between Native American tribes and settlers during the early years of American colonization.
