History of the Area
Established in 1908, the combined forests span over 1.2 million acres across Arkansas's Ozark Mountains and the Arkansas River Valley. Initially created to protect watersheds and provide a continuous timber supply, these lands have been managed by the U.S. Forest Service since their inception.

Before federal protection, much of this area was privately owned with logging as a primary industry alongside subsistence farming practices that shaped local economies for decades prior to park designation.

The region is rich in historical features including remnants from early European settlers such as homesteads, cemeteries, and old mining sites reflecting past land use patterns before conservation efforts took precedence.

Recent management focuses on balancing sustainable resource extraction with recreation opportunities like hiking trails while preserving ecological integrity through restoration projects aimed at maintaining native species habitats within its boundaries.
