Roche-A-Cri State Park, established in 1948, includes a 605-acre park area. Roche-A-Cri comes from French words meaning "crevice in the rock." The park has a 300-foot-high rock outcropping with a wooden stairway to the top. There are Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. The park has 41 rustic campsites within a forest of large oaks and pines. Carter Creek within the park offers trout fishing opportunities.

Roche-A-Cri Mound State Natural Area (No. 183) is a 25-acre parcel within the park that contains Roche-A-Cri mound with a mixed forest of old-growth pine and oak on the surrounding sandy terrain and talus slope. This mound is a late Cambrian sandstone outlier mesa rock outcrop and was once a rocky island in Glacial Lake Wisconsin. The summit now stands about 300 feet above the central sands plain. Its distinct long, narrow shape, the large cleft in the southern face, and flat-topped ridge bordered by craggy, precipitous cliffs made it a landmark for early travelers. A variety of early Native American petroglyphs and pictographs at the base of the southern face are easily viewed from an accessible platform. Turkey vultures use this high mound as a summer roost site.

Roche-A-Cri Woods State Natural Area (No. 362) is both within the park and adjoining it on the East side State Highway 13. Large white pine, white oak, black oak, red pine, and red oak dominate this 442-acre parcel. A diverse ground layer is present and contains at least 220 plant species. A forest of silver maple, green ash, and basswood border Carter Creek, a class II trout stream, which meanders through the area. Two native species prairies have been established in the eastern portion of this natural area.

Roche-A-Cri State Park was established in 1948 along with Governor Dodge and Wildcat Mountain State Parks. The park is on State Highway 13 just north of the City of Adams and Village of Friendship in central Wisconsin,.

The area was originally acquired as a roadside area by the State Highway Commission in1937.

Roche-A-Cri has 41 rustic camping sites. One site is accessible to people with disabilities and has electricity available.

Camping is available May through mid-October. Call the park office regarding the exact dates. Campers must register at the park office or use the self-registration box in the office parking lot before setting up. There is a dump station near the office building.

Campsite reservations:

Most sites are reservable, but sites 1 through 4 are first-come, first-served. Though not required, the campsites fill on most summer weekends, so reservations are recommended. Reservations are available by calling a toll-free reservation number (888) WI-PARKS or visiting the web site.

This centralized reservation system provides "one stop shopping" for any reservable site in the Wisconsin Park System. Campers may take site-specific reservations, reservations for multiple dates and/or multiple properties, and will receive immediate confirmation of their selections. A credit card is required for Internet reservations. The call center accepts a personal check if it is more than 21 days before you will camp or a cashier's check or money order if it is more than 10 days. Your reservation will be unconfirmed until your check or money order arrives. If the check or money order does not arrive within seven days, your reservation will be canceled.
