SENOIA STATE PARK
Leave Atlanta's traffic behind. Head thirty miles south down Highway 85 until the concrete gives way to thick loblolly pines and bright red Georgia dirt. You might know Senoia as the backdrop where film crews shot post-apocalyptic zombie shows for years, but the park area offers something way quieter. It's surprisingly peaceful here. Anglers pack their tackle boxes before sunrise, aiming to hook three-pound largemouth bass out of calm waters while blue herons stalk the muddy shallows.
Grab cheap boots so you don't ruin good sneakers on the slick clay trails. Georgia summer heat hits hard. So, most locals pack cooler jugs full of sweet tea and claim a shaded spot under the massive white oaks by mid-morning. Don't overthink your itinerary. Just walk the shoreline loop, watch red-eared slider turtles sunbathe on half-submerged logs, and then head into the historic downtown for a greasy burger.
