History of the Area
Upton State Forest is located in Upton, Massachusetts and has a rich history that dates back centuries. Here is an overview of the history of Upton State Forest:

1. Indigenous People: Prior to European colonization, the area where Upton State Forest stands was inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Nipmuc people. They had settlements and conducted activities such as hunting, fishing, and farming in the region.

2. European Settlement: The Town of Upton was officially incorporated in 1735. The land that forms Upton State Forest was originally part of large land grants from the English crown to early settlers. Early settlers established farms and homesteads in the area.

3. Forest Conservation: In the early 20th century, the need for forest conservation and public land preservation gained momentum in Massachusetts. In 1916, the State of Massachusetts authorized the purchase of 4,680 acres of land in Upton to create a state forest. The land was acquired from private owners, and Upton State Forest was officially established.

4. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC): During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Upton State Forest became the site of CCC Camp SP-15. The CCC was a federal program that employed young men to work on various public works projects. CCC workers at Upton State Forest built trails, bridges, picnic areas, roads, and other infrastructure that contributed to the development of the forest.

1. Loop Trail: This is a 6-mile loop trail that offers scenic views and suitable for all skill levels.

2. Upton State Forest to West Hill Dam: A moderate, out-and-back trail spanning approximately 8 miles with beautiful wildflowers along the path during springtime.

3. Christian Hill Loop: An easy-to-moderate difficulty level hike of about 4 miles offering stunning forest scenery throughout the journey.

4. Dean Pond Recreation Area Trails: These are several short trails around Dean Pond which offer great opportunities for bird watching and picnicking by the water's edge.

5. CCC Campsite Hiking Pathway: It's an historical hiking route where you can see remnants from Civilian Conservation Corps camp in this area dating back to Great Depression era; it spans roughly two miles round trip.

6. Westboro Road Connector Trail: Short but steep connector between main park areas, perfect if you're looking for something quick or want more challenging terrain on your longer hikes through other parts of Upton State Forest.

7. Upland Meadow Wildlife Viewing Route: Ideal spot for wildlife enthusiasts as it provides ample opportunity to observe local fauna amidst lush greenery over its three mile stretch.

Directions
Upton State Forest is located in the south-eastern part of central Massachusetts.

From east or west: Mass Pike (Rte. I-90) to Rte. I-495 south (Upton exit 21B) right off ramp, go straight 3.5 miles and take right onto Westboro Rd. Forest is 2 miles on the right.
